Just received this unit, so what follows is first impressions, not a performance review.First, the unit is solidly constructed, has a nice, easily readable display and has the main feature I was looking for - a logging barometer. Unfortunately there are also a few immediate negatives about the unit. I'll have to save comments on the barometer performance for later when I get it on my boat. This was delivered to my house at 6500 foot altitude, and I could not even move the digits on the altimeter calibration using the keypad, which just shows 936mB. I'm hoping that's just an altitude issue and 936 is simply the lowest reading possible. If you're looking to use this unit to monitor barometric pressure at more than a few hundred feet above sea level, it seems like this will not work for you.Good: Logging barometer, good display. Low power. Good standby power options to keep the draw to a minimum. Included power cable with fuse and fuse holder.Wish it were better:* Inconvenient mounting. The case is about an inch and a half deep. I'd like to bulkhead mount the unit. But there is no way to hang it from the back on a bulkhead. The power connector is a plug on the back, and there is a stud to facilitate a flush-mounting bracket that stand out in the middle of the back. I'll need to build a case about 2 1/2 - 3" deep then mount the case on the bulkhead. To me, this isn't the sort of unit that is commonly going to be flush-mounted. But if you do want flush-mount, it's all set up and easy to do.* The barometer is in millibars only. That's not really a huge issue, but it is annoying since I'm in the US, would be using a local airport to calibrate the barometer, and am also just plain used to dealing with inHg. A tiny bit of math makes an easy conversion, but it just wouldn't be that hard to have this as an option. The temperature display in in C only with no ability to switch to F.* The clock doesn't display seconds. This would have been easy, and a setup option for seconds or not would have been nice. I'll check the clock in a few days to see how accurately it is tracking.* The unit does not come with a DIN plug if you want to plug it into existing wind instruments. These can be a little annoying to get ahold of. Would have been nice to have this packaged with the unit.* Their masthead unit sends out MWV and XDR sentences, so it's not clear if the wind history is going to be particularly valuable if it isn't able to read sentences with true wind. There's no indication that the unit will read an MTA sentence from other instruments, so it doesn't seem that you could get temperature from non NASA units. I would like to be able to log true wind as sent through the NMEA systems. I probably won't bother to hook up the NMEA since it doesn't appear that will be possible.* The temperature display without NASA's instruments is only the internal temperature of the unit. And that's a few degrees higher than ambient, so I don't really care. The soft buttons are sometimes a little less than intuitive. Overall it's not bad, but "Inside" reads supply voltage and the unit's internal temperature. "Outside" reads pressure and internal temperature (since I don't have the masthead sensor). Would prefer to simply not have the temperature readout at all. They've worked very hard to put a lot of information on the display as to options and what the buttons do. Overall, that works pretty well. After I get back to my boat and try this at sea level for a little while, I'll try to remember to update this. With some software work, this could definitely be a very nice unit, and some modifications to the case would allow for easy bulkhead or flush mounting. It could be a great unit, but is just missing the mark in too many areas.
